Jason Koxvold: "KNIVES" – Left Behind In Rural America
“We need to stop talking about how people feel left behind and start talking about how people are left behind.”
In his long-term project „KNIVES“ documentary photographer Jason Koxvold explores the impact of the closure of the Schrade knife factory on the people in a rural town called Wawarsing (New York). It’s a blueprint of what happens on a larger scale not just in the US but in a globalized world when production is moved to countries where labour is cheaper and people feel left behind.
That’s what is so fascinating about Jason’s project – it’s not just about knives. In essence, it’s also about the struggle of white men to adapt to a new reality – and ultimately also about the rise of Donald Trump to the presidency of the US. And ultimately, KNIVES is an exploration of capitalism. Jason says: „The value of labour is not just financial. There is a great deal of importance we place on it as we shape our own self-identity.“
KNIVES is a beautiful example of how photography can be deployed to make social issues visible. It’s an in-depth visual exploration of the changes happening around us as capitalism is marching on.
